Jai-GungDo you have an interest in history and other cultures? Are you fascinated by the practices and philosophies of other faiths?

The Bendigo Joss House Temple would not be able to open its doors without a dedicated team of volunteers.

What’s involved in volunteering at the Bendigo Joss House Temple?

Would you like to learn more about Chinese beliefs and Bendigo’s Chinese story? If so, then you’ll enjoy volunteering at the Bendigo Joss House Temple.

We are currently recruiting for volunteers and are seeking individuals or couples who enjoy learning new things and who will get a kick out of sharing their new-found knowledge with visitors to the temple. There are also a few minor retail and administrative tasks that will need to be carried out each day.

All training is provided and we have shifts available for both weekdays and weekends. You will be working with a friendly and dedicated team that will teach you everything you need to know about this National Trust-listed site and its significance to the history of Bendigo.

It is ideal for couples or friends who want to volunteer as a team and involves a commitment of 2/3 five hour shifts per fortnight from 11am-4pm. A work shirt and jacket will be provided.

The temple is run by The Bendigo Trust which also looks after the Bendigo Tramways, Central Deborah Gold Mine and the Discovery Science and Technology Centre.

In the words of our current volunteers...

When British born Pat Dyball came to Bendigo 17 years ago she had no idea about the regions rich past. "I hadn't lived very long in Bendigo and knew very little about the history." That all changed when Pat began volunteering at the Joss House. "A friend was working here and said, 'We're short of volunteers'. I went along and I've been here ever since." Pat became fascinated by the culture and history she unearthed and now guides school groups and visitors through the temple. "I like telling people about the history. I also find the Chinese history fascinating and so I explain what worshippers do and why they do it."

Stan Cue has been a volunteer at the Joss House for over a year now. "I'm a tour guide, when visitors come in I give them a tour of the building and give them a bit of history about the Chinese people in this area." The retiree said volunteering and being able to share his knowledge and insights about the Joss House was very rewarding. "I used to be a taxi driver and a footy umpire, so I have always had an interest in the community."
