“Kung Hei Fat Choy!” from the Bendigo Joss House Temple.

Lantern Festival

Sunday 9 February 2020

Gather your family and join us as we celebrate Chinese New Year with a traditional Lantern Festival and begin the Year of the Metal Rat surrounded by beautiful feature lanterns.

Chinese New Year is considered the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays and we have chosen to celebrate it with a Lantern Festival, a tradition in China stretching back some 2,000 years.

The lanterns, which will be on display throughout the evening, have been specially decorated by children from the Dr Harry Little Preschool and Cre8 Kids Art Bendigo. They will look spectacular against the red backdrop of the Bendigo Joss House Temple.

Guests will be treated to performances by the Bendigo Chinese Association’s Lion Teams and Plum Blossom Dancers. Bendigo Joss House Temple tours, tea tastings and Chinese calligraphy demonstrations will also be available on the evening.

Traditionally a visit to a Joss House during Chinese New Year is a special event that involves presenting food and donations to the gods, there is also plenty of incense burnt.
